Ideas for home made craft storage systems

Published on by Sarah-Beth Watkins

Have you got lots of craft bits and pieces lying around? Could you do with a home storage system which declutters your working space? We have a look at some ideas for storing your arts and crafts supplies.

The small bits

One of the main problems with arts and crafts storage is the tiny bits and pieces that you collect and use. Beads, sequins, sparkles and glitter all spill from packets and create an artist’s nightmare. You can store the smaller bits in old spice jars. You can even use a spice rack if you have one handy for bead storage. For large amounts, keep them in glass jars. Nail their lids to the underside of a shelf near the area you use for craft work. Fill the jars and then screw them back into the lids. Look around for old jewellery boxes, some of these come with small drawers or sections you can use for your smaller items. Hand held fishing boxes can also be turned into bead boxes.

The larger bits

Pots and tubs are the answer for the smaller bits but what about the templates you use, stencils or craft paper? Big envelopes can help to organise your paper and card. You can make holders out of old cereal boxes, like magazine holders. Decorate them with paint and pictures and you will have free standing craft storage boxes. Write the contents on each envelope and add a colour code square so if you are searching for red paper you can find it instantly. You can store your patterns in this way too.

Cloth, tissue and wool can be kept in office boxes or cardboard cartons bought cheaply from office supply shops. These can be stacked under your work area and again colour coded for ease of finding what you need. A handy holder for your tools is a cutlery drainer. Cover it with printed paper or a coat of paint to make it more interesting and keep your scissors, cutters, knives, etc in the separate sections. You can also use old pen pots or a large jar to tidy your craft tools. With all those bits tidy and organised, you will find working on arts and crafts much easier!
