Rainy day art ideas

Published on by Sarah-Beth Watkins

Rainy days do not always have to be boring with our fun ideas for you and your little ones. You can use arts and crafts to relieve the boredom and make a rainy day turn into a special one.

The weather is not great and you cannot get to the park, but do not worry. Here are some ideas for a rainy day:

Get cooking

Make nice and easy rice crispies buns with the kids by melting cooking chocolate and pouring them in rice crispies. Flatten down and chill in the fridge. Decorate using sweets, chocolate strands or sprinkles.

Have an artistic picnic lunch

Pretend you are still going out and have little bowls of nutritional food set out as if at a picnic. Let the kids pick and choose what they want to eat.

Get out the paints and paper

To make it a bit different, let the children paint pebbles or have you got some terracotta pots that need sprucing up. Paper plates can be transformed into masks and decorated with any bits of cloth, string or odds and ends you have lying around. You can use the masks to put on a play and act out a story they like. This will involve dressing up and putting on a mini performance which could keep them going all day!

Make a scrapbook

If your children like books, get them to make their own. You can use images to fill a scrapbook and write in the story page by page or if they use the computer, set out a book using clip art and different fonts. They will be learning computer skills in the process.

Make paper puppets

You can make paper puppets by using card and lolly sticks. String up a white bed sheet, turn off the lights and shine a light so the puppets are in silhouette. Make up stories for the puppets and take turns in being the puppeteer or the audience. Soft toys can also be used as well as hand shapes for added effect.

Final word Do something different with arts and crafts and your rainy day will not be so boring!
